Production Facility Location, Transport Capabilities and Supply Chain Performance in Beverage Manufacturing Companies in Greater Kampala.
(Makerere University Business School, 2025-09-01) Kuramya, Will
This study aimed at examining the relationship between production facility location, transport capabilities and supply chain performance in beverage manufacturing companies in Greater Kampala. The objectives of this study were to examine: the relationship between production facility location and supply chain performance; transport capabilities and supply chain performance; the combined relations between production facility location, transport capabilities and supply chain performance. A cross-sectional survey design with a quantitative approach in generating the required information was used. The study population comprised of 39 beverage manufacturing companies from which a sample size of 35 companies was drawn. Data collection was done using survey questionnaires and the SPSS software package was used for data analysis. Production facility location had a strong relationship with supply chain performance (r=0.436, p<0.01) as was the case with transport capabilities (r=0.309, P<0.01). However, regression analysis showed that a R Square of .543 of supply chain performance can be accounted for by production facility location and transport capabilities. The study concludes that investing in and continually enhancing transport capabilities is a crucial strategy for beverage manufacturing companies in Kampala to achieve and sustain high levels of supply chain performance. It is also concluded that challenges presented by production facility location can collectively erode the supply chain's ability to meet customer demands promptly, manage costs effectively, and respond swiftly to market changes, all of which contribute to the observed decrease in supply chain performance. The study recommends that there is need to regularly assess the geographical location of their production facilities in relation to key supply chain nodes. It is also recommended that an integrated supply chain strategy that considers both production facility location and transport capabilities should be developed.
