Enhancing the use of Boda Bodas for Product Deliveries among Pharmacies in Kampala
(Makerere University Business School, 2023) Gracie, Namubiru
Private pharmacies deliver pharmaceutical products with a variety of means, such as motor vehicles, motorcycles popularly known as Boda boda (BB), bicycles, Lorries and buses. The objectives of the study were to examine the benefits pharmacies attain in using Boda bodas for the delivery of medicine/drugs to customers in Kampala, to establish the challenges pharmacies face in the use of Boda bodas for deliveries, and to suggest strategies pharmacies can adopt to enhance the use of Boda bodas for deliveries to customers. The study used a cross-sectional research design with a quantitative approach and comprised a study population of 100 registered pharmacies in Kampala who have Boda bodas stationed for deliveries; a sample of 80 pharmacies was chosen for the study using Krejcie and Morgan (1970). The study used purposive sampling to select the participants for the survey. To collect the primary data, structured, closed-ended questions with a predefined series of answers was used. The study findings revealed that Boda bodas help reduce congestion at pharmacy shops. Furthermore, it was noticed that Boda bodas enable the safe delivery of pharmacy products and are a flexible means of transport for pharmacy products. The study findings indicated that challenges pharmacies face in the use of Boda bodas for deliveries tended towards as follows: Shortage of delivery containers for pharmacy product delivery and Lack of clear basis for selecting genuine Boda bodas with proper customer care, among others. The study findings revealed that the strategies pharmacies can adopt to enhance use of boda bodas are the following: Provision of safe packaging equipment to Boda bodas, empowerment of customer relations staff; and others. The study concluded that the usage of Boda boda for delivery of pharmaceutical products had faced a number of challenges which if addressed would help pharmacies manage delivery faster and effectively.
