    Management Committee Leadership, Community Participation and Project Sustainability: A Case of Rural Water Implementation in Yumbe District.

    The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among rural water management committee leadership, community participation and project sustainability of rural water projects in Yumbe district. It examined the relationship between rural water management committee leadership and project sustainability; assess the relationship between community participation and project sustainability and finally evaluated the predictive power of rural water management committee leadership and community participation on to project sustainability of rural water projects in Yumbe District. The researcher used quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional research design to study sustainability of rural water projects. From a population of 140 rural water projects, a sample size of 103 was selected guided by Krejcie and Morgan, (1970) sample size determination table. Instruments were pretested and only valid ones with reliable Cronbach’s alpha values above 0.70- were retained (Nunnally (1978). The researcher issued 309 questionnaires but received 242, giving a response rate of 78.6%. The findings of the correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between rural management committee leadership and project sustainability. It also indicated significant positive relationship between community participation and project sustainability of rural water projects in Yumbe district implying that the level of rural water management committee leadership and community participation is associated directly with project sustainability of rural water projects. The regression analysis showed that rural water management committee leadership and community participation had a significant effect on project sustainability. The researcher concluded that, project sustainability of rural water projects requires good community participation and management committee leadership. If community participation and rural water management committee leadership are combined together, they would subsequently enhance good project sustainability of rural water projects in Yumbe district in Uganda.
