    Determinants of Modern Cook Stove Adoption in Tanzania: The Influence of Perceptions, Socioeconomic Factors, And Access to Grid Electricity.

    This study investigates how household perceptions of traditional stoves, socio‑economic conditions and access to grid electricity shape the adoption of modern cook stoves in Tanzania. Using nationally representative data from 6 ,564 households collected in the 2021/22 Impact of Access to Sustainable Energy Survey and weighted logistic regression models, it quantifies the marginal effects of explanatory variables on the probability of adopting modern cooking appliances. Modern cook stove use remains modest (around 40 % of households). Believing that smoke from traditional stoves has smoke benefits on repelling insects reduces the likelihood of adoption, while surprisingly, stating that food tastes better on traditional stoves is associated with greater uptake, suggesting complex stove‑stacking behavior. Socio‑economic factors are important: secondary and tertiary education and urban residence increase adoption, whereas agricultural livelihoods and home ownership reduce it. Access to grid electricity emerges as the strongest enabler, adding about 50 percentage points to the probability of adoption. These findings highlight that cultural perceptions and socio‑economic constraints continue to hinder the transition to clean cooking even in electrified areas; policies must combine infrastructure and affordability interventions with culturally sensitive behavior‑change programmes targeted at rural and low‑income households.
