Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to report the results of the study which was intended to examine the state of stakeholder involvement in the construction of the Mukono-kyetume- Katosi-Nyenga road project, challenges faced with inadequate stakeholder involvement in the construction of the Mukono-Kyetume-Katosi-Nyenga road project, and the possible strategies for stakeholder involvement in the construction of the Mukono-Kyetume Katosi-Nyenga road project. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design, combined with a descriptive quantitative research approach. The study was carried out on the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) who were perceived to be the beneficiaries of the road construction project. The population was 6019 PAPs from which a sample size of 361 respondents was used. Simple random sampling was taken for this study. Completed questionnaires were collected from 339 PAPs indicating 93.9% response rate. Data was analysed through percentages and descriptive statistics using Statistical Package for Social Sciences V.20 (SPSS). The study findings revealed that the state of stakeholder involvement in the construction of the Mukono-Kyetume-Katosi-Nyenga road project was high. This was due to the presence of a grievance management system, increased awareness of sensitive programs during the project, and provision of information about compensation. The challenges of inadequate involvement of stakeholders include; delays in property compensation in the construction of Mukono-Kyetume-Katosi-Nyenga road project, failure in managing conflicting stakeholder interests, undue influence on the road project, and the challenge of insufficient due-diligence checks on those awarded the contract. Some of the possible strategies for stakeholder involvement include; information disclosure, presence of proper communication tools for easy interpretation and translation to intended beneficiaries, and involvement of the stakeholders in project planning. Based on these findings, it is important for UNRA to shorten the process of handling grievances so that all the Project Affected Persons’ concerns are handled within a short time and more consultations be carried out specifically at grassroot level where targeted beneficiaries/ Project Affected Persons are located.
