dc.description.abstractThe increasing trend of failures among projects in the recent past has attracted a lot of debate as project managers relentlessly try to identify the underlying factors responsible for project success. This study was therefore undertaken with the specific objectives of; establishing the relationship between project planning and project success, identifying the relationship between communication and project success, testing the mediation effect of commitment on the relationship between project planning, communication and project success, as well as examining the relationship between project planning, communication, commitment and project success among youth projects within Kampala. A cross-sectional research study with a quantitative research approach was applied to tabulate data with the help of SPSS version 25. This provided a better interpretation and analysis of the relationship between the study variables. Using a sample size of 208 ongoing youth projects drawn from 52 projects, the study successfully obtained data from 51 projects (91.8%) with an individual response rate of 191 questionnaires (92.7%). The study also applied inferential statistics of correlation and regression analysis. In addition, the questionnaire instrument was tested for validity and reliability ensuring that the study variables returned the minimum acceptable benchmark of 0.7 as guided by Cronbach. From the study, the findings revealed a statistically significant and positive relationship between; project planning and project success, communication and project success. Furthermore, it was observed that commitment mediates the relationship between project planning and project success among youth projects in Kampala. In the same way, commitment is a mediator variable for communication and project success. Moreover, it was also revealed that project planning, communication and commitment are significant predictors for project success with commitment offering a higher variance in project success than communication and planning. In view of the findings in this study, managers within Kampala should endeavor to strengthen project planning through scheduling of tasks, proper allocation of resources and monitoring of the actual implementation of project activities. Similarly, managers need to define and implement a formal communication framework that involves all external and internal stakeholders for different projects. Additionally, it is necessary for project managers to undertake daily monitoring of the project activities to identify warning signs for deviations between planned project activities and the actual level of implementation. The role of commitment should be emphasized through encouraging innovation and risk taking, creating an open environment and planning for team building initiatives. Furthermore, project staffs need to undergo further training to improve their competencies and skills in project planning and communication in order to increase coordination hence improving the likelihood for project success.
